Two Years! Two Years!

Two years, two chicks, two wild hats! CRAZY TIIIMES!

So here’s how it went down.  Upon realizing that it was the eve of this blog’s two year anniversary of existence I wanted to go all out to celebrate.  I knew that the mere fact that I have been writing reviews of forgotten music has easily qualified me for the Internet’s Hall of Historically Important Lore, so I wanted to pull out all of the stops and spend tons of dough on a HUGE party!

Early today I called up this really ritzy club in Boston and said I planned on getting 200 of my friends and readers together.  We wanted to arrive in limousines while decked out in crisp Hot Topic gear, and I wanted to make sure we had kegs of root beer a’flowin’ at the club by the time we got there.  Well, the club wanted a lot of money ($2,000 for a half hour) and I figured ah, who needs a club anyway?  I’ll go spend my money on some great food instead for my great guests!

I staked out multiple restaurants in the area to see who could accommodate my 200 hardcore partymongers.  They all said “You must be crazy” and I said that yes I was and that I planned crazy parties.  Unfortunately, no one was willing to take on all of my people for a Friiiidaaaay niiiight! (said while leaning back and waving both hands in the air) Yeah okay, that’s fine too.  Let’s just get the people together and we’ll figure someplace out to bombard with bodies.

I then created an Evite entitled “Dollar Bin Lays a Deuce!” and enticed people with free dollar bin CDs, gallons of root beer, and my treasured company.  It must have been a real busy day for people, for out of the 200 people I invited 152 said No, 47 said Maybe, and 1 person said Yes.  That person was me.  But I was totally there and banked on the 47 Maybes as surefire boogie downers later that night.

Well, the night came and I got 47 text messages that said they were at some ritzy club in Boston and couldn’t make it, sorry.  Dang!  Looking at me and the other party guest (me in a mirror), I decided to go to a last minute Jimmy Buffett cover band concert at a Coat of Arms.  My reasoning was that I might as well watch someone else party, I guess.  I ordered a cheeseburger and, burger in hand, waited for the band to come on.  Then I spotted these two chicks with wild hats in the front row.  I walked up to them and said, hey ladies, did you know that today is the two year anniversary for my Rummaging Through the Dollar Bin music blog?

And they went APESH*T CRAZY!

I managed to snag the above picture with my cell phone before I was attacked by the equivalent of savage harpies (for all you Greek mythologists out there reading).  I mean, they started grabbing my clothes, my hair, my eyeballs … I did not know that these two women just happened to be my biggest fans *and* liked Jimmy Buffett a whole lot.  I scrambled out of that place in tatters, realizing too late that my cheeseburger was in their clutches.  I had to let it go (r.i.p) and managed to grab a cab home.

It may not have been the 200 person mayhem party that I was thinking of, and I may or may not have been winked at by the cabbie, but I gotta tell ya … I can’t wait for three years, baby.

Collecting Music-Lovin’ Dust For One Year!

One year ago today I posted my first review on this newfangled idea of a blog site.  Even though it’s only me writing up this stuff, I figured I’d throw a crazy party to celebrate with all of my readers.  This was last night…

Okay, I’m lying.  Half-naked people with body paint and copious amounts of liquor did not happen.  However, I instead rocked out in a collective band at a friend’s party last night, so I guess that works as well.  Maybe I’ll do the body paint thing after two years.

If you have read a review or have been following along once in awhile, perhaps you have picked up something relative to your music interests from this site.  I admit, the summer has been spent enjoying things that don’t require the written word (unless you count a 50+ page term paper … which temporarily killed my love for writing, haha).  I plan to pick things up at the normal 2-3 reviews per week pace that I was enjoying for most of the year.

Getting honest on ya, I am rather excited that I managed to keep this blog going for a whole year.  My writing has gotten a little better and, as evidenced by my earlier reviews, the length of my writing has also nearly doubled for each review.  I don’t think I’ll ever get as technically verbose as some of those other popular review sites, but for what I’m willing to churn out I’m content with where I’m at.

Thanks for reading and hopefully the next year will be even better.  By the way, will this body paint I have on come off with just a shower, or will it take a few days?

Two Months In: Taking the Time for the Pat on the Back!

Party_Aftermath2Dude, last night was crazy!

Alright, the celebration wasn’t that crazy, but as of Thursday it has been two months since I have been throwing some words together around three times a week to inform people of music they may or may not give a toss about.  However!  However, I do think I’ve managed to interest maybe a few, (at least one?) surfers in checking out some bands they hadn’t heard before.  Hey, when the music gets streamed for free it’s easier to take a listen, eh?  I actually managed to re-listen to some of these discs and appreciate them differently than what I had intended to conclude through words, so these reviews have been more rigorous than I had imagined.  Still, I’m having a good time writing some last hurrahs for these albums and I hope to keep it up for yet another two months.  Then I’ll have one of those kind of parties in that picture above.

As for what’s to come, (and this is where you get excited), I think I might try to add a few different types of articles to mix things up a bit.  I have a few ideas regarding the strategies of dollar bin shopping, record labels that I see often, and perhaps some stuff even I won’t pick up.  I might even talk about why I bother to do this when there are freely available mp3s out there!  You know, like what decade am I from anyway?!  Nostalgiasist!  I’m also thinking of writing a few reviews of discs that I got for spending a whopping five bucks or so.  They are dollar bin bound, after all.  Perhaps I’ll call it my Big Money reviews and add a disclaimer for those who need to be warned off about pricey used items.

So in the coming months there’ll be more writing, more descriptions of harrowing vocal styles, and likely a few more busts that come to light.  Trust me, it’s a lot easier to write about something I like than panning bands who, though misguided, have more musical talent than I do.  Thus is the life of the critic, and as I sip the last of those beers I found unopened amidst the party aftermath, I stretch my fingers and snap on the headphones to get ready to write the next opinion piece.  So hey, thanks for reading so far and prepare for some more!
